Queensland state election, 2001. Following the 2001 state election, One Nation’s primary vote collapsed to less than ten percent of the vote. As shown by this map of the election result, One Nation held onto just three seats: Lockyer, Gympie and Tablelands. These were remnants of the party’s electoral success in 1998 when One Nation stormed onto the political scene and captured 11 seats highlighting new divisions in the political landscape. Mater Hospital, c1930. Established by the Sisters of Mercy, the Mater Private hospital at South Brisbane was officially opened by the Queensland governor Sir William MacGregor on the 14 August 1910. Blessed by Cardinal Moran, the main building commanded a hilltop around which the hospital expanded. The Mater Public hospital was the second facility established at the site in 1911. In 1925, the archbishop of Brisbane, James Duhig, laid the foundation stone for the Mater chapel and convent. In July 1931, the Mater Children’s Hospital was opened and immediately started treating patients. Collection of the Queensland State Archives

Civil Liberties rally march route, Brisbane, 1968. This map captures the divisions between old and new left within a purely spatial context. While Brisbane’s New Left required a large map of the city outlining a precise march route, no such map is extant from North Queensland’s strike waves, due simply to the fact that these struggles were highly localised affairs in small towns, often based around only a few streets. Organisation however appears as vital in both instances, with the almost comical march starting time of 12:37 indicating a high degree of organisational rigidity among Brisbane’s youth protesters.
