Chinese brooch

This brooch, made from carved stone, depicts a Chinese character that represents 'happiness' or 'auspiciousness'. It comes from a shop known as Kwong Sang & Co., a wholesale and retail Chinese merchant that operated in Toowoomba from the 1880s. Chinese migrants moved towards retail and agriculture in the late nineteenth century as they were gradually restricted from pursuing other occupations.
