Red Cross Society Headquarters, 409 Adelaide Street, Brisbane, 1918

Red Cross Society Headquarters, 409 Adelaide Street, Brisbane, 1918. The headquarters of the Queensland division of the Red Cross was the centre of the vast network of Queensland district branches. The rent was originally donated by a family trust then later made up by funds from the Society. The bottom three stories of the building were occupied by the Red Cross Society, the all-important receiving deport located on the ground floor with adjacent sewing and stock rooms. This building became a symbolic and physical point in Brisbane’s cityscape during the war as a place where women volunteered their labour for the war effort. Red Cross Journal, January 1918.
