Collection of the National Library of Australia

Queensland railways showing all railways open for traffic, under construction and approved by Parliament. Prepared for the Commissioner of Railways, Brisbane, 1948. In Queensland there were several unlinked railway systems. Families using the Queensland Bush Book Club would make their way to the nearest railway station to collect their parcels. Those living a long distance from the rail depot, made arrangements with private carters or the postal service for the next leg of the journey. Collection of the National Library of Australia

In January 1938 William Coombs (1892-1948) and his family embarked on a trip beginning in Murwillumbah in northern New South Wales to Hayman Island.

Survival in Queensland during climatic extremes has often relied on the rail network.
